¡Viva la Vida Española! 5 Reasons Why Americans Thrive in Spain

Spain is a land of sun-kissed beaches, sizzling paellas, and siestas, and if you're looking for a change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the US, it might just be the perfect place for you. With its rich culture, delicious cuisine, and relaxed way of life, Spain is a popular destination for Americans seeking a change of scenery.

| Welcome to Sunshine Country

Spain is known for its sunny weather, with temperatures reaching the high 80s in the summer and mild winters. Say goodbye to shoveling snow and hello to sun-soaked days at the beach. Whether you're a fan of suntans or prefer a more temperate climate, Spain's diverse regions have something to offer everyone. The Costa del Sol sees an average of 320 sunny days per year, whereas Spain's northern coast can be cool and rainy for much of the year, similar to Washington state or the U.K. The months of July and August offer delightful weather and "prime summer months" for visitors and locals. Madrid tends to stay in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, but can reach above 90 F during the height of summer and on occasion sees light snow and frosty winter nights. Seaside towns like Valencia and Malaga enjoy hot summers and mild winters.

| Affordability? yes please!

Yep, compared to other large European countries Spain's prices come in lower compared to what you see in the U.S. Even in Madrid, one of the most expensive locations in Spain, some of our contacts shared that they can live (modestly) on $3,000 a month. Rent is a little or a lot cheaper than in the U.S., depending on what part of Spain you choose. Living in a city where you don’t need a car can be a huge saving as well utilizing public transportation's low fare. Spain’s infrastructure is all first-world level. Roads, bridges, public transportation, electricity, and waste management are all equal to North American standards or better. You can drink the water from the tap, take a hot shower, or charge your phone any time of the day or night.

| The Food is a Dream Come True

Spain is famous for its delicious cuisine, with dishes like paella, fideuà, bacalao, and churros taking center stage. The country is also known for its fresh seafood and mouth-watering olive oil, making it a paradise for foodies. Whether you're dining at a local taverna or a Michelin-starred restaurant, you'll never go hungry in Spain. In most cities, you'll find that each barrio has multiple markets to dine and shop at! You can find a glass of red wine, vino copa for about $4 and a small beer is even less. At midday, you can even get a three-course meal, menu del dia that includes a coffee, wine, or beer for $10 to $15. You also don’t have to tip in restaurants so you save 15-20% every time you go out to eat. Trust us that your body will also thank you for all the fresh foods you consume on a Mediterranean diet.

| The Culture is Rich and Diverse

Spain has a rich history and culture, with influences from the Moors, Romans, and Visigoths, to name just a few. From the bustling cities of Madrid and Barcelona to the charming villages of Andalusia, Spain offers a wealth of experiences for those who love to learn about new cultures. Whether you're a history buff, art lover, or simply appreciate cool architecture, you'll never run out of things to see and do in Spain.

| The Lifestyle is Relaxed and Enjoyable

Spain is famous for its relaxed pace of life, with siestas, leisurely meals, and a focus on spending time with friends and family. The country is also known for its passionate and friendly people, making it easy to feel at home even if you're far from it. For some Americans, the fast-paced, high-pressure lifestyle of the United States is a major turnoff. Whether you're looking for a permanent change of life or just need a break from the American lifestyle, Spain should be on your list!
